WHAT TO DO IN AND AROUND BRISTOL
CHEDDAR GORGE: Home to the great cheddar cheese. Whilst visiting cheddar you can watch cheddar cheese being made in the traditional old fashioned way. You can also watch hard sweets being made in the traditional way. The gorge to the north of the village is the largest in England and attracts more the 500,000 visitors each year. At its highest point it is 113m with a near vertical cliff face. There are two main caves to explore, Gough's and Cox's. It is believed that Gough's cave was used in medieval times to make cheese. Cheddar man also resides in the caves. At 9,000 years old, he is the oldest complete skeleton in the UK. This is also the only accredited cannibalistic site in the UK.
WELLS CATHEDRAL: Described as a prayer in stone and glass, Wells Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. He resides in the adjacent Bishops Palace. Although this is primarily a place of worship, guided tours are available or you can elect to just wander among the beautiful and most substantial collection of medieval stained glass windows. To hear the ten bells ring is worth waiting for. The ten bells are the heaviest collection in one place in the entire world. They are also unusual in the fact that the circle runs anti clockwise as opposed to the traditional English clockwise circle.
BATH: There are so many things to see and do in Bath. The most famous is probably the Roman Baths. Here you'll see how the natural hot springs were used for bathing and medicinal purposes. If it is pampering you are after look no further than the Bath Thermae Spa. Here the natural hot spring water used in the Roman Baths will be used in your treatments. Within the Roman Baths are the pump rooms. Here you can indulge in afternoon tea whilst a string quartet plays beautiful music. You can also taste the spring water. No trip to Bath is complete without a trip to the Sally Lunn Tea Room to taste the traditionally made Sally Lunn Bun or a Bath Bun. You can also visit the American museum in Britain. Here you can view the exhibits, the house and the gardens. You can also purchase traditional American recipes.
GLASTONBURY: Glastonbury is not just home to one of the greatest music festivals in the world. Visiting the Tor is quite spectacular. This bulk of a hill rises up from Somerset's flat landscape. Glastonbury is also rumoured to be the mythical home of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, Avalon. In the original legends King Arthur is portrayed as the keeper and protector of the Holy Grail, the chalice that holds the blood of Jesus Christ. Glastonbury Abbey is the oldest "above ground" Christian church and was rumoured to have been built to house the Holy Grail. At the base of the Tor is the chalice well. This holy well has been in constant use for at least two thousand years. The twenty five thousand gallons of water that issue from the spring every day has never failed, even in times of drought.
WOOKEY HOLE CAVES: As well as the world famous caves and unique underground rivers and lakes, you can explore the history of mankind itself. These caves were once inhabited by cavemen and later on by the Celts. Other attractions include Britain's last surviving traditional paper mill factory, dinosaur valley, fairy garden, a mirror maze and a Victorian penny arcade with real old penny coins.
EAST SOMERSET RAILWAY: A great trip through the rolling Somerset countryside on an authentic steam train. Starting from around £5 one can take the controls and become the driver. Or you can enjoy an evening murder mystery on board one of the locomotives. If booked in advance one can dine on the trains. Enjoy either Sunday lunch or afternoon tea.
"The lounge / diner is just huge, a great area for me and the whole group to entertain. Can't wait to come back."

"We decided to book a weekend in Bristol, as haven't been down that way in some years. We were lucky enough to book into the Penthouse at Portland Gate Apartments. I can honestly say we were very impressed :- literally minutes from the shops, bars and restaurants! The apartments itself is well equipped, modern and bright. The roof terrace is something really special especially the weekend we booked as the weather was spot on. Already we have booked to stay again and this time we're bringing the mother in law. Sleeps 2-6 Self Catering Bristol
Large Self Catering Apartment in Bristol:
The Penthouse apartment forms part of a range of impressive self catering apartments within a charming Georgian building. This Grade 1 listed property is ideally located in Portland Square. The Penthouse presides at the top of this building taking up the entire end block. It offers 3 bedrooms, and stunning views across the city from the roof top terrace. It is ideal for Bristol's new shopping and commercial district. As it sleeps six, the Penthouse is provided with three free marked parking slots in our attached car park. Free hi-speed internet access is also provided. Short weekend breaks and long stays are available. All apartments have recently been modernised and boast brand equipment such as dishwashers and washing machines. The Penthouse is decorated and furnished to a high standard. It has Italian, deep leather sofas, a showcase kitchen, clean laminate floors a themed bathroom and all the things you'd expect from a plush Penthouse in the city.
The apartment has the latest technology such as digital keypad (keyless) entry, automatic lighting on entry and at night, discreet pin spot mood lighting makes the apartment look more like a moody hotel lounge. This building was in 2007 awarded the famous Blue Plaque. That makes our building one of only five self catering apartments in the south west of England with the prized Blue Plaque.
More about the apartment:
The Penthouse is a massive 1200 square foot apartment taking the entire top floor of the building. An impressive spiral staircase takes you to the huge roof top terrace which offers magnificent 360 degree views of city and fine Georgian Square directly below. The Penthouse apartment has been featured on TV and was recently credited by President of the UK Architect's Association as 'a truly swanky pad.' The huge communal area is one massive open plan room which spans half of the apartment. It has windows covering all sides except one allowing plenty of light and commanding views. This huge open area houses the lounge, gallery, dining room, kitchen, breakfast bar and central corridor.
Portland Penthouse offers a very large modern fully fitted kitchen which has been filmed many times for cookery programs. It boasts high gloss granite-style worktops and a very long breakfast bar which spans the entire length of the kitchen. Several large glass atriums allow natural light to flood in from the roof; one is ideally located above a sofa in the lounge allowing you to gaze at the stars at night simply by looking up. Central to the apartment is an impressive custom made 6ft wind chime which dangles from the roof top conservatory. The conservatory is accessed by the main spiral staircase, it is an ideal place to relax and unwind. The conservatory is actually on the roof top and as such it offers reasonable views of the area without having to go outside or near the edge. A Penthouse needs a millionaire style luxury bathroom and so we themed the bathroom in a neo-classical style with statues, cherubs and central arch over a sunken, Jacuzzi-style corner bath with a shower attachments.
The Penthouse offers three bedrooms. Two contain double beds and the third contains adult size metal bunk beds. The two main bedrooms share en-suite bathroom which contains a wash basin and modern cubicle power shower. There is obviously a separate bathroom / WC at the end of the corridor.
Portland Square is a superb location as it's just two minutes walk from Bristol's main shopping centre (Cabot Circus and Broadmead). It is about six minutes from Bristol's main train station Temple Meads, 60 yards from the M32. Portland Square is ten minutes walk from Bristol's main amenities such as Bristol's main Bus Station and coach terminal, The Bristol University, Frenchay Hospital, Temple Gate, BRI (Bristol Royal Infirmary), The Magistrates Court and other Law Courts like the new Bristol County Court. Other popular areas like Park Street and Broadmead are also in easy walking distance.
Portland Square is a delightful Georgian square with well kept central gardens when can be viewed from the Penthouse galleried landing with window seats. The square is said to be the largest 'intact' Georgian square in England. Naturally it is of great pride to Bristol and has just undergone a five million pound refit. Across the square are wine bars and pubs (serving fine food). Bristol's famous 'wedding cake' style church presides over the square and now houses a trendy media cafe and circus training school. Within our building is a ground floor café and across the square are two wine bars both serving fine food.
The Penthouse is ideally located close to the M32. Also within close reach is the infamous ship S.S. Great Britain, Weston-super-Mare - seaside resort, the famous Wookey Hole Caves, notorious Glastonbury Tour, Royal City of Bath, ancient Stonehenge plus Wells Cathedral and last but not least Stourhead Gardens.
