What's in and about the Bristol area?

WELLS CATHEDRAL was once described as the prayer in stone and glass. The magnificent Wells Cathedral is still the great seat of the well known Bishop of Bath and Wells. The Bishop still resides in the adjacent Bishops Palace. Although this is normally a place of worship, there are frequent guided tours available. Alternatively you may elect to just wander around observing the array of medieval stained glass windows. You must stay around to hear the ten bells ring. These bells are the heaviest bells in one place in the entire planet. Also unusual is the fact that the circle runs in an anti clockwise manner as opposed to the usual English clockwise circle.

CHEDDAR GORGE is the home of cheddar cheese. When visiting cheddar you may see cheese being made in the old traditional way. Also see hard boiled sweets being produced in the traditionally. To the north of Cheddar village is the largest gorge in England and attracts more the 600,000 tourists a year. At its highest point it's some 113 meters and a near vertical cliff face. There are 2 main caves to explore, Gough's cave and Cox's cave. It's rumoured that Gough's cave was once used in medieval times to make cheeses. The infamous Cheddar Man also resides in these spectacular caves. At an estimated 9,000 years old, Cheddar Man is the oldest complete skeleton in the whole of England. This is also an accredited cannibalistic site and the only one in England.

BATH has so many things to offer. Probably the most famous is the Roman Baths where you'll see how the natural hot springs were used for bathing and reputed medicinal purposes. If you like pampering then the Bath Thermae Spa is great as the natural hot spring water that is used in the Roman Baths will be used in your health treatments. The Roman Baths also house the Pump Rooms were you may indulge in a delightful afternoon tea whilst in the background a string quartet plays wonderful music. You must however taste the natural spring water. Finally no trip to the Royal City of Bath is complete without a visit to the Sally Lunn Tea Rooms. Here you may like to taste the traditionally made Sally Lunn Buns or Bath Buns. Your group can also visit the popular American Museum in Britain. It is here that you can view interesting exhibits, the large house and fabulous gardens. You may also buy some traditional American food recipes.

GLASTONBURY is not just the home to the largest music festival in Europe. Visiting Glastonbury Tor is really spectacular. This bulk of this hill rises up from Somerset's typically flat landscape. Glastonbury is said to be the mythical home of no other the Great King Arthur. It is in the original legend that King Arthur was portrayed as the protector of the Holy Grail. This grail being the chalice that holds the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whilst in Bristol you must see Glastonbury Abbey, as it is the oldest "above ground" Christian church in England. It was said to have been built to protect the Holy Grail. It is at the base of Glastonbury Tor where the chalice well can be seen. It has been in constant use for some two thousand years. Twenty five thousand gallons of water that spurt from the spring every day has never, ever failed, and that is even during times of drought.

WOOKEY HOLE CAVES are the world famous caves with unique underground rivers and wide lakes. Our apartments make a great base for exploring these. You can learn the history of man itself at Wookey Hole. Once inhabited by cavemen they were later on used by the Celts. Many other attractions at Wookey include the last surviving traditional paper mill factory in South West England, the dinosaur valley, a large fairy garden, a superb mirror maze and an old Victorian penny arcade with real old penny coins.

EAST SOMERSET RAILWAY is such a great weekend day out. Chug along the rolling Somerset countryside in an authentic steam train. Starting from around a fiver any one can grab the controls becoming the train driver. Enjoy a great evening of murder and mystery on board one of the many locomotives. Many groups book in advance and actually dine on the trains for special occasions. This is also a great Somerset location for Sunday lunch or just afternoon tea.

Sleeps 2 Self Catering Bristol

Large Self Catering Apartments in Bristol's Portland Square:

The Loft apartments are a range of 1 bedroom apartments which sleep two. All boast period style 4 poster beds. Laminate flooring throughout with quality wipe free lino in the kitchens and bathrooms. The apartments are all bright, airy and spacious with large open plan lounge / dining and kitchen. All have magnificent views over Portland Square and obviously the higher up you are the greater the views over Bristol City skyline.

The loft apartments are a selection of impressive one bedroom self catering apartments within a Grade 1 listed Georgian building. Due to the planning restraints during this buildings conversion, only a small number of apartments could be developed in the large building. As such it has resulted in very generous size apartments. We believe that no other city centre apartments offer such immense proportions. They are centrally located in a beautiful Georgian square called Portland Square which is in the heart of Bristol's new shopping area Cabot circus. They offer free, secure off street parking and free high speed internet. Available for short weekend holidays, 7 day breaks and longer stays. All our apartments have been modernised recently, many boast brand new equipment like dishwashers, washing machines etc. Furnished to a good standard, all apartments offer designer leather sofa couches, easy clean laminate flooring and modern 'hotel style' bathrooms and kitchens.

There are generous size modern bedrooms in all apartments with many en-suites. All have romantic four-poster beds, full size computer / writing desks and furniture plus large walk in changing room / wardrobes. We pride ourselves on our hotel style fully lined bathrooms, laminate flooring. We also use professionally laundered crisp white bedding and large luxury towels. The very latest technology is utilised like digital keyless entry and automatic lighting. These unusually spacious apartments have benefitted from being located within a Grade I listed building which was recently awarded the coveted Blue Plaque. This makes it one of just 17 self catering properties in England with the Blue Plaque.

Bristol's Portland Square is in a superb location as it's just a two minute stroll from the main shopping centre (Broadmead / Cabot Circus). A further 6 minutes away is Bristol's mainline train station, and for cars it is sixty yards from the M32. Also within a ten minute walk are Bristol's main amenities including the main Coach and bus Station, Bristol University, Temple Gate, Frenchay Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), Bristol Magistrates Court, other Law Courts eg Bristol County Court etc. Park Street, Gloucester Road and Broadmead are also within walking distance.

Local Area:
Bristol's Portland Square is a beautiful Georgian square with central gardens. It is reputed to be the largest intact Georgian square in Britain and is of great pride to the people of Bristol. As such the square was recently overhauled with new pavements, railings, street lights, parking and pedestrian standings at a cost of five million pounds. Across this great square are two wine bars and a pub (serving good food). In the square is Bristol's famous St. Peter and Paul 'wedding cake' style church. No longer religious, it recently received a multi million pound lottery grant and was completely restored. It now houses a rather trendy media cafe and the circus training school is a permanent resident. You can sometimes see them performing through the great stain glass windows. Within our building is a popular ground floor Café and across the square are two wine bars both serving fine food.

The Loft Apartments - Sleeps 2

These flats are ideally located. Also within easy reach is S.S. Great Britain, the seaside resort Weston-super-Mare, Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury, Bath, Stonehenge, Wells Cathedral, Stourhead Gardens etc.
